What’s worse is that researchers have no cure looming over the horizon. The best we have to work with is prevention, which is why it’s so important to maintain a clean and healthy lifestyle. But what does that mean for the food you eat? What is safe? What is clean? If the emphasis is on healthy living, then healthy eating is up near the top of the list. The best practice to adopt is to avoid foods known to be linked to cancer. |

1. CANNED TOMATOESCenters for Disease Control and Prevention researchers have measured BPA in 93 percent of about 2,500 urine samples from a broad national sample of adults through the NHANES study (Calafat, 2008). Most people don’t know the chemical makeup of the metal cans their food is stored in. For instance, the can is lined with bisphenol-A, or BPA, which has been proved to affect the genes work inside the brain of rats by NAS. Tomatoes, due to their highly acidic nature, absorb this chemical from the lining and pass it on to you. Be safe and buy fresh organic tomatoes. Not only are they better for you, they taste better too. |

PROCESSED MEATSCuring meat is an ages-old process that allowed primitive man (and subsequent generations) the ability topreserve meat for long-term storage. Methods included salting, smoking, even fermenting in some cases. While it’s a very helpful tool in any culinary arsenal, how your meats are preserved makes all the difference. Processed meats have such a long shelf life because they are inundated with salts and chemicals. They also contain a lot of sodium nitrate, which may make them look fresh and appetizing for weeks on a shelf, but is actually a well-known carcinogen. |

3. MICROWAVE POPCORNAccording to the Livestrong website, “there is a chemical used in the nonstick coating on the inside of the popcorn bags that decomposes, producing a compound called perfluorooctanoic acid. This chemical has been associated with increased risk of certain cancers, including liver and prostate cancer.” You might not think popcorn could be dangerous … but it is. Much like canned foods, microwave popcorn bags need special chemical treatments for them to work as well as they do. Actually, the microwave popcorn bags are lined with a carcinogenic chemical called perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA. Excessive exposure to PFOA increases your risk for liver, kidney, bladder, pancreas, and testicular cancers. |

4. POTATO CHIPS“Most junk foods are loaded with other cancer causing substances called trans fats and trans fatty acids. This is because of the oils that are either in the food or that the food is fried in” (naturalon). Beside being high in fat and calories, which cause obesity and high blood pressure, they’re also loaded with preservatives. It has been shown that a 1 ounce serving of chips every day can cause a 2-pound gain in weight! Besides all that bad news, the high-temperature process used to make chips creates a carcinogen called acrylamide. |

5. FARMED SALMON“Levels of 14 toxins were significantly higher in both European and North American farm-raised salmon than in fish caught in the wild” (dailymail). Fish can be a very healthy food, but farmed salmon should be avoided. The crowded conditions that farmed salmon are forced to live in can have some very adverse effects on their health, which in turn effects yours when you eat it. Sea lice are very common, as are chemical additives to make the flesh look bright and pink. They also contain far less omega-3 and high levels of PCB’s, mercury, and cancer-causing dioxins. Yuck! Don’t forget about GMO’s. |

6. HYDROGENATED OILS“Hydrogenated oils, also known as trans fats, are vegetable oils that have been processed by creating a chemical reaction with hydrogen. This solidifies the oils and increases the shelf life of the oil” (BCC) Hydrogenated oils are vegetable oils that that are chemically extracted from their source. Often these oils are deodorized and colored to look appealing. Vegetable oils are high in Omega–6 fatty acids that may cause heart disease and various cancers, especially skin cancer. Avoid hydrogenated oils to help prevent cancer. IT’S TIME TO START PAYING MORE ATTENTION TO WHAT WE PUT IN OUR BODIES. IF YOU FOUND THIS INFORMATION USEFUL, BE SURE TO SHARE IT SO OTHERS CAN HAVE THIS VALUABLE KNOWLEDGE AS WELL. |
